From that side of the river, you get great views back across to the city, and most importantly, the Cologne Dom (Cathedral). This massive structure, which sits on the western bank of the Rhine River, is lit up as night falls. With a spot a upstream, a little bit south, I was able to capture the cathedral with the Deutzer Bridge and the tower of the Gross St Martin (church) in front.
I must admit that one of my favourite shots, which I captured almost by accident, was as the bridge lights came on and before they had reached their full strength, gave off a nice green glow; the same thing happened with the cathedral lights. Because of the train traffic across the bridge, there are some nice streaks of white light as they pass.
Completed in 1959, the Severin was the first new bridge built across Rhine at Cologne after World War II. It features a triangular tower that rises 77.2 metres.
I had to get back to the Deutzer Bridge to catch the train to head back to the apartment, and I decided to walk across it, which gave the opportunity for a few extra shots, without the bridge itself and Gross St Martin blocking the view of the cathedral - just for something different.
The cathedral towers really do dominate the skyline, and with its massive size, it is easy to see why the cathedral is such a focal point for the city.
